The Prequel Class

Method Writing focuses on writing that is authentic, coming from one’s own true inner voice, whether your interest is fiction, poetry, memoir, non-fiction, etc. In this “PREQUEL” class, we’ll uncover your authentic, deep voice, and learn how to create effective narrative in any form using the basic components of all good writing: action, dialogue, description, commentary.

Level 1 Class

In your first two months you’ll dive into First-Level Method Writing, working through the first four concepts in Jack Grapes’ Method Writing book. This groundbreaking approach gets you in touch with your true inner being. You’ll write authentically—sounding like you, not a “fancy writer.” That’s what all good writers and artists strive for: VOICE—writing like you talk.

Teen Prequel

The “Teen Prequel” is for 10-15 year olds. We will focus on creative writing using techniques designed to avoid “writer’s block.” Young writers will discover the joy of improvisational writing, the use of vivid imagery, and the depth of personal statements to deepen their voice and facilitate a profound creative experience.

About me

I grew up in Norway, and from an early age I wanted to write. But reading was slow, spelling was hard, and I never felt like I fit the picture of what a “writer” was supposed to be. In college, a teacher suggested I get tested, and that’s when I learned I had dyslexia. For the first time, everything made sense. There was nothing wrong with me. My brain just worked differently.

For years, I believed the myth that writing was all about sounding “writerly”—big words, big stories, and trying to impress. It took me a long time to learn that none of that matters. It’s never too late to become the writer you already are.

In my late 40s, while helping a friend launch a sandwich business, another friend asked how my writing was going. I said “fine,” knowing it wasn’t. She invited me to a Wednesday morning writing class. Something inside me said, “This is your chance.” I showed up—and that’s the day I met Jack Grapes, the creator of Method Writing. That moment changed my life.

A decade later, I’m in my late 50s, still a student of Jack and of Method Writing. Three years into studying with him, Jack pulled me aside and asked if I would begin teaching alongside him. I didn’t plan it, but it has become one of the most meaningful parts of my life. Today, I’m part of the Jack Grapes teaching staff, teaching the same technique that opened the door for me.

I read everything—prose, poetry—and I take my time. And yes, my spelling is still a bit bananas, but it’s improving every day. I don’t hide from mistakes. I don’t apologize for my mistakes. My spelling mistakes don’t reflect who I am, and they certainly don’t stop me from writing or calling myself a writer.

I teach because I know what it feels like to want to write and not know where to begin. Method Writing gave me a way in. It helped me find my voice. My hope is to help you find yours.
